A time to mourn … a time to build up 1

Elizabeth Shaw was president of the Society for more than a decade and capably presided at an engaging committee meeting on 20th July just two weeks before she suddenly passed away on 5th August.

Naturally this was a great shock to the Society and a huge set-back; but we have re-grouped and carry on preserving history and the work she inspired!

At its meeting on 17th August 2024, the Committee appointed Delys Ravenhill as President (vide Section 5.3 of the Constitution).

A Memorial Service to honour Elizabeth was held on 12th October 2024.

VISION FOR A MUSEUM
AND A SHANNON HERITAGE PRECINCT

The Society and the Shire of Manjimup have long considered a museum in Walpole.

In 2021, the Society learned that the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions’ old Shannon Mill Fire Store / Sign Shed, initially built in Shannon and transported to Walpole after the Shannon Mill closed in 1968, was to be decommissioned.

A vision of the two sheds becoming a museum to display the Society’s growing historic collection linked to the existing Community Hall (transported from Shannon in 1971) and forming a Shannon Heritage Precinct was supported by the Shire and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA).

The Department agreed to donate the buildings and Shire provided $5,000 as seed funding to develop a plan.

 Development Approval and Extension

  1. The Committee met with Roger Menezes (Baysan Construction in Collie) in October 2023.
  2. `

Roger was involved the successful relocation of Munro House in Northclffe. Munro House is an original group settlement home that, prior to relocation, was deteriorating in a cow paddock.

  1. The project stalled due to Roger's unavailability but he has recently said he is now in a position to resume work on the project and is currently estimating costs.
